Carol Ann (Backman) Rasmussen, 78, Overland Park, formerly of Vliets, died Monday, November 9, 2020 at St. Luke's Hospice House, Kansas City, MO. Visitation will be 12:30 p.m., Saturday, November 14 at Salem Lutheran Church, Axtell with the funeral service following at 1 p.m. Rev. Cindy Cone and Rev. Jerome Brownlee will officiate, and Shirley Polson will play the organ. The songs include "Amazing Grace", "Because He Lives", "Through the Years" by Kenny Rogers and "I Know That My Redeemer Lives". The service will be live streamed on the Salem Lutheran Church, Axtell Facebook page. Masks will be required. Pallbearers are Ron Backman, Brennan Randel, Dennis Randel, Devin Randel, Doug Rasmussen and Michael Rasmussen. Burial will be in Frankfort Cemetery. Carol Ann Backman was born to Donald A. and Edith (Vandorn) Backman on September 18, 1942, delivered by Dr. Stewart at Frankfort, Kansas. She was Confirmed and married at the Salem Lutheran church located six miles north of Vliets. She attended grade school at Vliets, High School at Frankfort, graduated from Kansas State University with a Home Economics degree, and completed additional college course work at Avila University for special education teaching. Her college education was interrupted when she stayed home to care for her mother during the last six months of her mother’s life. Carol married Kent Rasmussen September 1, 1962. Three sons were born into this marriage with the last two being identical twins. All three sons graduated from Kansas State University and now live in Overland Park, KS. After college she taught Home Economics at Alta Vista and later special education in Kansas City. She retired from teaching with the arrival of the twins and later worked as a cashier for the grade school. Carol set her priorities aside to serve the needs of others as well as being an outstanding caring, sharing, and forgiving person. She was multi-talented and learned new activities very quickly. For example, she was the self-taught barber for her husband for over 45 years. Carol was an excellent wife, homemaker, outstanding cook learning to cook at an early age, and enjoyed craft work for many years. For several years Carol fabricated Christmas decorations of her own designs for others. She was also active on the church Altar Guild. Carol was preceded in death by her parents and brothers Howard and Richard Backman. She is survived by her husband Kent, of the home; sons Eric (Lynn), Todd, and Corey; granddaughter Abigail; grandsons Elijah, Rhett, and Ryan; and brother Gerald Backman along with nieces, nephews, and cousins.
