Charles DeWayne Phelps, 82, (formerly Arkansas City, KS) passed away on June 5, 2020 after struggling with health issues related to a stroke in 2009. Visitation was Tuesday, June 9 from 2 to 9 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary in Marysville. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 10, 2020 at Kinsley Mortuary. Rev. June Stoker officiated. Deb Landoll played the organ and Ashley Mason sang “It Is Well with My Soul”. The congregation sang “Amazing Grace,” “Just As I Am” and “How Great Thou Art”. The pallbearers were Jayce Phelps, Trent Phelps, Joseph Colwell, Quinn Colwell, Jeremy Phelps and Sam Hochler. Burial was in the Marysville City Cemetery Charlie, the oldest of ten boys, was born October 9, 1937 in Bartlesville, OK to parents Harold and Marcella Phelps. He attended schools in the Beverly, KS area and graduated from Westfall High School in 1955, where he played 6-man football. Charlie joined the army and was stationed at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO. He married Carol Ann Orr of Marysville, KS on August 8, 1960. They had three children, Tom, Brenda, and Julie, seven grandchildren, and two great grandchildren. Charlie worked as a construction foreman in many places in Kansas, including Holton and Hutchinson before settling in Arkansas City in 1985, where he retired from L.G. Pike Construction in 2008. Charlie enjoyed fishing, especially his annual fishing trip with his brothers at Lake Wilson. Charlie also enjoyed tinkering on motors and his over-sized garden. Charlie’s survivors are wife Carol Ann, children Tom (Bonnie) Phelps of LaCygne, KS, Brenda (Kevin) Colwell of Overland Park, KS, and Julie (Kory) Hochler of Overland Park, KS; brothers Wendell, Bill, Clayton, and Larry; grandchildren, Jayce (Clare) and Trent Phelps, Annie, Joe, and Quinn Colwell, and Sam and Sadie Hochler; and great grandchildren Lucca and Maela Phelps. He is preceded in death by his parents, brothers, Greg, Rocky, Wesley, Ron, and Gary, and many other family and friends. A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later.
