Clarence E. Wullschleger, 89, of Axtell, Kan., died March 3, 2018 at Seneca, Kan.Visitation is Thursday, March 8 from 3 to 8 p.m. at the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home in Axtell. The family will receive friends from 5 to 7:30 p.m.A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, March 9 at the Salem Lutheran Church near Axtell. David Winquist and Sharon Hunzeker will officiate. The musicians will be Shirley Polson and Micah Hawkinson. Music will include “Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing”.The honorary pallbearers will be Matt Ahlquist, Greg Ahlquist, Justin Rodgers, Tom Huerter and Micah Hawkinson.Burial will be in the church cemetery.Clarence was born October 23, 1928 at Winifred, Kan., to Emil and Bessie (Flin) Wullschleger. His father died at a young age and his mother later married Merrill Bullock.On May 24, 1953, he married Phyllis Bronaugh at Bigelow, Kan. After this marriage they farmed in the Frankfort area until moving to Centralia in 1960 where Clarence worked for Woolsoncroft Grain for 3 ½ years and then for the same company under new owner CGF Grain for 7 years. He then worked for CGF Oneida for 5 years. In 1976, he began working for an elevator owned by Bob Graham. In 1983, Graham sold the business to Clarence and four other stockholders. Clarence operated Axtell Grain until retiring in December 1997. He then worked the next 10 years for Wanklyn Oil.Clarence was a member of the Salem Lutheran Church where he served on the church board. He also served on the Axtell City Council and was Mayor of Axtell for 16 years.In 2005, at age 77 he earned his GED diploma.He was preceded in death by his father, Emil Wullschleger; step father, Merrill Bullock; mother, Bessie Bullock; and brother, Marvin Wullschleger.Survivors include his wife, Phyllis; daughters, Sheryl (Melvin) Ahlquist, Bern, Kan., Sharlene Douglas, Oconomowoc, WI, Julie Ingram, Dallas, Tex., and Barbara (Tom) Rodgers, Ozawkie, Kan.; siblings, Norma Blakely, Manhattan, Kan., and Howard (Tonnie) Wullschleger, Emporia, Kan.; eight grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren.A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home.
