David J. Gerleve

David Joseph Gerleve, 74, Marysville, died May 14, 2018 at Community Memorial Healthcare, Marysville, Kan. Visitation was Friday, May 18, from Noon until 8 p.m. at the Hanover Mortuary, Hanover, Kan.A rosary service was 9:30 a.m., Saturday, May 19 at St. John's Catholic Church in Hanover.Mass of Christian Burial  at 10 a.m., Saturday, May 19 at St. John's Catholic Church. Father Joseph Kieffer officiated. Janet Fritschi was organist and the choir sang "Come to Me," "The Strife is O'er," "We Walk by Faith" and "On Eagles Wings."Pallbearers were Doug Gerleve, Dale Gerleve, Cory Wieden, Scott Rettig, Brad Rettig and Troy Rettig.  Honorary pallbearers were Greg Licht, Brian Grauer, Craig Wieden, Royce Wieden, Frank Jandera and Joe Schuessler.Burial was in St. John's Catholic Cemetery. David was born November 4, 1943, on the family farm in Charleston Township, Washington County, to Alphonse and Eleanor (Yellick) Gerleve.  He grew up on the family farm until 1950, when his family moved to Hanover, due to his father’s early death in 1949.  David graduated from St. John’s Catholic School in 1957 and Hanover High School in 1961.  After high school he worked with Grain Elevator Construction and as a landscaping maintenance employee. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in the fall of 1961 and served until 1965, as a Communications Center Specialist and central office Cryptographic Operator at Sheppard Air Force Base and Lackland Air Force Base with a two year stay in Libya, Africa.  He also served in the reserves until 1967 and was honorably discharged from the 47th Squadron. After his discharge, he moved to California and other coastal regions, to work with cable installations and phone communications for businesses and hospitals.  He also worked in real estate and lived in Georgia a short time. He moved to Denver for fifteen years to be closer to family.  In June 2012, he moved to Marysville Senior Housing, due to failing health, and enjoyed more family nearby. David enjoyed family gatherings, listening to smooth jazz and stories of ocean areas he had frequented, and spending time with nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents; brother, Bernard Gerleve; and sisters, Arlene Wieden, Shirley Licht and Marilyn Grauer. He is survived by sister, Patricia Rettig, Basehor; and several nieces and nephews. A memorial fund is established and will be designated later.  Contributions may be sent in care of Hanover Mortuary, Hanover.
