Dennis E. Rockwell, 81, of Marysville, KS, died September 10, 2024, at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville.
A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, September 14, at the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Marysville. Gary Phillips officiated. Wayne Kruse sang "Abide With Me" and "Wings of a Dove" while Deb Bruna played the organ.
The pallbearers and honorary pallbearer were Don Ballman, Dave Bruna, Joe Pilsl, Dean Thomas, Wilbur Johnson, Travis Rieth and Dave Richardson.
Burial followed in the Marysville City Cemetery.
Dennis was born June 1, 1943, in Marysville to Carl and Celia (Eckstein) Rockwell. He was a 1961 graduate of Marysville High School. Dennis went to work in Topeka, KS for UP as a mail handler, then worked for Pepsi in Manhattan, KS. He served in the National Guard in Colorado Springs, CO, moving back to Marysville in 1970 and took over the shoe repair business from his father.
Dennis was a Volunteer Fire Department member, serving as Assistant Fire Chief and many other positions since 1970. He taught for the Kansas Fire and Rescue Service for over 20 years. Dennis was also a member of the American Legion Post #163. For many years he supervised the organization of the Veteran's Day Ceremony at the Marysville High School.
Spending time with his grandchildren and growing an organic garden were among his favorite things to do. Dennis also enjoyed getting ice cream cones from Sonic and watching steam engines and trains.
Preceding him in death were his parents; wife, Harriette; and sister, Debbie Watts.
Survivors include sons, Rich (Danyel) Rockwell, Hiawatha, KS, Tim (Rachel) Rockwell, Oketo, KS; brothers, Ralph (Mary) Rockwell, De Soto, KS, Norman (Deb) Rockwell, Chattanooga, TN; four grandchildren, Tyler Rockwell, Baleigh (Chris) Bargmann, Karlee (Bryce) Backus and Addysyn Rockwell; and two great-grandchildren, Corbyn Bargmann and Nora Backus.
A memorial fund has been established for the Marysville Volunteer Fire Department. Contributions may be sent in the care of Kinsley Mortuary.
