Evelyn Marie Wassenberg, 86, of Marysville, KS, died March 13, 2020 at Community Memorial Healthcare in Marysville. Visitation is Monday, March 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary. Due to recent events in relation to services for Evelyn Wassenberg: NO ROSARY SERVICE TONIGHT NO PUBLIC FUNERAL SERVICE Evelyn was born on October 8, 1933, at Clifton, KS, one of twelve children born to Patrick A. and Mary (Kieffer) L’Ecuyer. In May of 1954, she graduated from Marymount College of Kansas with a diploma in nursing. On October 29, 1955 she married Maurice Paul “Fearless” Wassenberg of Marysville. She started her career as a floor nurse at the Randall Hospital in Marysville. When that facility closed, she worked at Community Memorial Hospital, soon becoming Director of Nursing. In 1982, she obtained her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Marymount College and the couple moved to Fort Scott, KS, where she began teaching at Fort Scott Community College. She then obtained her Master of Science in Nursing from Wichita State University. Besides teaching, she worked as a nurse in various hospitals, temporarily retired several times, finally retired for good in 2005. After retirement and while still living in Fort Scott, she was active in the altar society for Mary Queen of Angels Catholic Church, taking pride in running the church’s “Country Store”. She also enjoyed visiting people in the nursing home and being with her surrogate grandchildren, Emily and Grant Hill of Fort Scott. As Maurice’s health declined, Evelyn moved back to Marysville to be near him as he was a resident of Frankfort Community Care Home. In Marysville, Evelyn continued her volunteer work visiting nursing homes. She was a member of St. Gregory’s Catholic Church and Altar Society. As her health declined, she moved into assisted living at Cambridge Place in Marysville. While there, she continued her volunteer service by leading the weekly rosary and ensuring the bird bath was always full. She thoroughly enjoyed watched the birds and squirrels outside her window. Survivors include her daughters, Sherry (Tim) Gaines, Timnath, CO, and Laura (Ron) O’Neil, Beattie, KS; four grandchildren, Mindy Wilson, Hays, KS, Melissa Bruna, Beattie, Ben O’Neil, Lincoln, NE, and Robert (Lindsey) O’Neil, Lincoln; two great grandchildren, Arthur Bruna and Claire O’Neil; siblings Patrick (Betty) L’Ecuyer, Richard L’Ecuyer, Martha (Frank) Nutsch, Helen (Linus) Linnenberger and Robert (Alberta) L’Ecuyer; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; siblings, Jerry, James, Agnes, John, Mary, and Patricia. The family requests in lieu of flowers memorials be made to St. Gregory’s Catholic School.
