Jim was born on November 5, 1963, to James and Jeanette (Holthaus) Borgerding, in Marysville. He graduated from Marysville High School in 1982.
On November 30, 1996, Jim was united in marriage to Melissa Libby at St. Gregory’s Catholic Church.
Jim was a farmer and rancher and also owned and operated Borgerding Seed. When he was younger, he worked at Valley Vet Supply in the shipping department and was a substitute Ag teacher.
Jim was a member of the Kansas Livestock Association, K-State Alumni Association, REA Nemaha/Marshall Board, FFA Alumni, Knights of Columbus, and served on the Church Council in years prior.
Farmer/Rancher could be Jim’s middle name because it was at the heart of who he was. Since beginning his farming career in his sandbox, he has farmed every day of his life - even when pried from the farm to go on vacation. Jim learned while working alongside his Dad. He continued to grow his knowledge while studying Animal Science at Kansas State University, graduating with a BS in 1986. As a member of the second class of Kansas Agriculture and Rural Leadership (KARL), he traveled the entirety of Kansas studying farming practices, as well as toured France, Belgium and Germany living with farmers.
Jim’s passion for agriculture was greatly apparent in his support of Kansas State, Future Farmers of American, Kansas Young Farmers and FFA Alumni. He shared his love and knowledge of agriculture not only with his townie wife and his children, but also with the ag students at MHS as a substitute teacher.
Jim was a great friend to all he met. A dear friend said that she hopes everyone has a Jim Borgerding in their life. Someone who chooses to believe in them, encourage them, make them laugh, and advocate for them. What an honor to have had such a friend. I will never forget his kindness to me. Other words from friends tell how infectious his laugh and smile were - always making people feel wanted and included. Jim was the nicest man and a true pillar in the ag community. Jim was a tremendous man, a faithful man, a truly amazing man who would always stop to talk making you feel special! Jim was an incredible man whose kindness, strength, and love touched so many lives. And his faith is admirable and also something I loved about him.
Preceding him in death is his infant daughter, Isabella on July 1, 2001; brother, Patrick; and infant sister, Catherine.
Survivors include his wife, Melissa; son, Jim (Kinzie) Borgerding, Topeka, KS; daughters, Jillian Borgerding, Manhattan, KS, and Jodee Borgerding, Marysville; parents, James and Jeanette Borgerding, Marysville; and sisters, Susie (Jeff) Snapp, Westmoreland, KS, and Linda Prior, Hanover, KS.
In honor of Jim’s memory, a memorial fund has been established at St. Gregory's Catholic School. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
