James "Tony" Anthony Schmale

April 17, 1967 — February 25, 2020

James Anthony "Tony" Schmale, 52, Marysville, died Monday, February 25, 2020 at his home surrounded by his family. A Celebration of Life service will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, March 2 at the United Methodist Church, Marysville. Tony was born on April 17, 1967 at Loveland, CO to Loretta and Marshall McDaniel and adoptive parents, Vern and Mary (Winchester) Schmale. He was baptized and confirmed at the DeWitt United Methodist Church in 1979. He graduated from Tri-County High School at DeWitt, NE in 1985 and Southeast Community College at Milford, NE 1987. Tony was a member of the Nebraska Air National Guard from 1985-1991. On June 14, 1997, Tony married Mary Latta at Marysville. There were three children, one daughter and two stepsons. Tony spent over 33 years working as an automotive machinist in Marysville. He owned and operated Tony’s Machine the last 25 years. Crafting horsepower was his passion, but he thoroughly enjoyed all aspects of his job. He designed and built many high-performance engines for muscle cars, antique autos, street cars, boats, race cars and truck pulling vehicles. He also worked on many engine components for area farmers and tractor repair companies. He was a go to guy for a variety of unusual mechanical repairs, from fixing bionic body parts to airplane parts to broken bolts. He was very particular and meticulous while performing his work, no matter what he was working on. When he wasn’t working, he enjoyed spending time with his family and his dog “Ted”. Ted accompanied Tony to work daily and spent most of his waking moments alongside him. Tony enjoyed all kinds of racing, cooking Cajun food, grilling, visiting with friends, sitting on his deck with a fire pit and sharing humor. He was preceded in death by parents Loretta & Clyde Slaughter, Vern Schmale, Mary Schmale and father-in-Law Galen Latta. Survivors include wife Mary; daughter, Stephanie (Nick) McClung of Marysville; step-sons, Dustin O’Neil of Marysville and Garret (Hannah) O’Neil of Medicine Lodge, KS; and Grandchildren Jakobe, Theia and Kayson McClung and Kinsley O’Neil; father, Marshall (Maria) McDaniel of Nampa, ID; mother-in-law, Thelma Latta of Marysville; brothers Brian (Kari) McDaniel, Scott (Rachel) McDaniel; sisters, Amber Gilbertson and Erin Montgomery; sister-in-law Amy (John) Runnebaum; brothers-in-law Robert (Stacey) Latta, Rodney (Susie) Latta and Randy Latta; and many nieces and nephews.
