Vliets, KS

John Alfred Stiner, 96, passed away peacefully at his longtime home and farm in Vliets on Monday, October 14th, 2024.

Private family services were held followed by burial in the Vermillion Cemetery.

Born to parents Merl E. and Nellie, John was a lifetime resident of the Frankfort area. John was an industrious child who would earn pocket money by keeping bees and collecting scrap metal. He learned the trade of farming from his father and worked on the farm owned by his grandfather, Alfred (Wick) Stiner, located near Winifred. John graduated from Frankfort High School in 1946, where he played football, and was a member of the chess club and FFA.

John was introduced to the love of his life, Dorothy Bramhall, by his older brother Linnea prior to his tragic death in 1944. John and Dorothy wed on her 22nd birthday in the front room of the Vermillion farmhouse owned by his parents. The couple lived in Vermillion until moving to their longtime home in Vliets. They had four children: Vickie, Steven, Chris and Diane.

John was an accomplished row crop farmer. His crops included wheat, soybeans, corn, and milo. He proudly raised registered Hereford cattle, treating his animals with kindness and compassion, often naming them. John was proud to work alongside his son and grandson, Chris and Levi, who continue the family tradition of farming.

Additionally, John was a talented woodworker, crafting cabinets for his wife and making beautiful rocking horses for his grandchildren. An intelligent man, John was an avid reader who was passionate about American history, enjoyed reading National Geographic, and always watched the Weather Channel. He also had an incredible sweet tooth, he loved all of Dorothy’s baking, root beer floats, and the candy chocolate Turtles.

Above all, John was a kind and loving man with a gentle spirit. He found joy in everyday life and beauty in nature. He valued spending time with his family. He will be greatly missed by his family and community.

Preceding him in death is his wife, Dorothy; infant son, Steven; and son-in-law, Joseph Dunn.

Survivors include John’s son, Chris (Judi) Stiner; daughters, Vickie Dunn, Palm Desert, CA, and Diane (Jim) Ronnebaum, Home, KS; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild who will all miss him dearly.

A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later.  Contributions may be sent to Padden Funeral Chapel, in care of Kinsley Mortuary, PO Box 147, Marysville, KS 66508.
