Leah J. Wassenberg, 77, of Marysville, KS passed away August 19, 2020 at St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln, NE with her family by her side.
Visitation was Sunday, August 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Kinsley Mortuary.
A rosary vigil service was held at 7 p.m. Sunday, at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Marysville.
A funeral service was held at 10 a.m. Monday, August 24 at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church. Father Quentin Schmitz officiated. The musicians were Rachel Massoth and Paula Landoll-Smith. Music included “Here I Am Lord”, “The Lord Is My Shepherd”, “You are Mine”, "On Eagles Wings”, “Pastures of the Lord” and “How Great Thou Art”.
The honorary pallbearers were Jason Brinegar, Derek Crawford, Matt Beckman, Nathan Parmentier, Tommy Brinegar, Caden Brinegar, Evan Franco, and Lyle Franco.
Burial was in the church cemetery.
Leah was born to the late Rex and Geraldine Rickert, November 10, 1942, in Marysville. Leah graduated from Marysville High School in 1960 and lived in Topeka, KS briefly before returning to Marysville. She married Donald P. Wassenberg on November 6, 1969 in Marysville and together made Marshall County home for the next 50 years.
Leah is survived by her husband Donald, four children: Kimberly Beckman and Elizabeth (Jason) Brinegar of Marysville, KS. Donald (Angie) Wassenberg of Merced, CA and Jeffrey (Leslie Flaws) Wassenberg of Hopkins, MN; two brothers: Gerald/Pudge (Vicki) Rickert, Hastings, NE; and Ray (Andrea) Rickert, Manhattan, KS; nine grandchildren: Tara (Derek) Crawford, Matt Beckman, Danielle Beckman, Nathan Parmentier, Tommy Brinegar, Ashlinne Brinegar, Caden Brinegar, Evan Franco, Lyle Franco; and 3 great grandchildren: Braxton and Kynslee Crawford, Peyton Turner.
Leah loved her family. She was a terrific friend, wife and mother. The role she cherished most was Grandmother. She was their glue, their cheerleader, and always let them know how incredibly proud she was of them. Leah was also an active member of St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church.
A memorial fund has been established to the University of Kansas Cancer Center. Contributions may be sent in care of Kinsley Mortuary.
