Mary Philomene Goeckel, 88, of Hanover, KS, died at her home on October 23, 2022. Visitation was held Thursday, October 27, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Hanover Mortuary in Hanover and one hour prior to service times at the church. A vigil service was held at 7:00 p.m., Thursday at St. John's Catholic Church in Hanover. A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Friday, October 28, at St. John's Catholic Church. Burial was in the church cemetery. Mary was born May 12, 1934 at rural Hollenberg to John and Josephine (Mehring) Martin. She attended grade school in a limestone country schoolhouse and her freshman year attended an all-girls school in Omaha. On April 12, 1955 she was united in marriage to Leo Goeckel at St. John’s Catholic Church in Hanover. They were blessed with seven children, Daniel, Dianne, Constance, Ronald, Phyllis, Lisa and Danita. Mary was a homemaker and was known for her cinnamon rolls and crescent rolls. She did sewing, made quilt pieces, crochet, embroidery, and made baby blankets for her grandchildren. She made all her daughters’ and a granddaughter’s wedding gowns and the bridesmaid dresses. Mary was a member of the St. John’s Catholic Church, Altar Society, Mill Creek Unit and the neighborhood card group. Preceding her in death by her parents; husband, Leo; son, Daniel; grandson, Cody Ohlde; sister, Sister Joan Martin R.S.M.; and brother, Greg Martin. Survivors include children, Dianne (Chuck) Garber, Hanover, Connie (Alan) Ronnebaum, Axtell, Ronald Goeckel, Hanover, Phyllis (Andrew) Ohlde, Linn, Lisa (Stuart) Schwarz, Wamego, Danita (Marvin) Deters, Manhattan; nine grandchildren, three step grandchildren; six great grandchildren and three step great grandchildren; brothers, Jim Martin, Hanover, Gene Martin, Washington, Donald Martin, Hanover, John Martin, Salina; sister, Betty Goeckel, Hanover. A memorial fund has been established to the St. John’s Renovation Project and Meadowlark Hospice. Contributions may be sent in care of the Hanover Mortuary.
