Richard was born on March 11, 1932 at rural Herkimer to Henry and Elsie (Remmers) Bartels. He attended Green Valley Country School #96, graduating 8th grade. Richard attended Stateline Lutheran Church his entire life. He contributed to the church with his physical abilities and financially. He made sure his children attended church, Sunday school and vacation bible school. Richard was pleased when his grandchildren and great grandchildren were baptized, confirmed and attended church. When he was able, he attended church every Sunday. When he couldn’t attend, he would listen to four different church services on the radio. Richard said his prayers, at mealtimes, in the mornings and evenings before going to bed. He loved reading the Bible and devotionals. As he always said, “Me and the Lord – we’re good!” Richard had a dairy farm north of Herkimer and south of Frankfort, as well as a dog kennel south of Oketo. He enjoyed gardening, especially when that first juicy ripe red tomato was ready to pick. He would look at seed catalogs and would always order too many plants. He loved flowers, especially the ones that attracted bees and hummingbirds. Richard would call people on their birthday. He loved celebrating all events and holidays with his family. He kept a calendar with all the birthday’s and would transfer them to a new calendar every year. He married Jerllean Eggert on April 1, 1951 at St Peter’s Lutheran Church in Wymore, NE. They later divorced. He married Martha Bass on January 27, 1980 at Stateline Lutheran Church. She died June 5, 2017. Also preceding him in death were his parents; brothers, Lavern and Arthur; and sisters, Viola, Minnie and Juanita.
