Rita was born on January 12, 1933, to Roger and Gertrude (Schafer) Shepherd in Rexford KS. The family eventually moved to Tulsa OK, where she lived for over twenty years. She attended the University of Tulsa where she met her college sweetheart, Bob Mesec. Upon graduation, the two began their extensive journey with Phillips Petroleum Company, taking them to numerous cities and states over the span of Bob’s 38 year career. Houston was their final stop, which is where they resided the last 30 year
Throughout her life, Rita was a selfless and dedicated wife and mother to three children and terrifically loyal to the many lifelong friendships she made throughout the years. Rita also enjoyed working as an elementary school teacher, Executive Assistant at Union Texas Petroleum Company and finally her most rewarding job at her own sorority, Kappa Kappa Gamma National headquarters. Giving back to the community was very important to Rita and she did it in many ways, including being part of the Kappa Kappa Gamma Alumnae Association, Mortar Board, Houston Baptist University Guild Silver Tea and Second Baptist Church - Ticket to Heaven Class.
Preceding her in death is her husband, Robert (Bob) on January 8, 2008; and her parents. Survivors include her son Mark (Christy) Mesec; daughters Susan Mesec and Jill (Steve) Sandbo; seven grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and her sister, Barbara DeLand.
A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home. The family may be contacted at: mark@mesec.com
