Roger L. Turnbull, 76, of Vermillion, Kan., died March 27, 2019 at the Frankfort Community Care Home
Visitation was Monday, April 1, from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. at Padden Funeral Chapel in Frankfort. The family received friends from 5 to 7 p.m.
A funeral service was held at 10:00 a.m., Tuesday, April 2, at the Frankfort United Methodist Church. Rev. Jim Akins officiated. Janet Plegge played the organ while the congregation sang “Here I Am, Lord” and “I’ll Fly Away”.
The pallbearers were Verlin Slifer, Blake White, Ivan Sedlacek, Terry Bishop, Leo Hunninghake and Brian Hunninghake.
Burial was in the Frankfort Cemetery.
Roger was born August 23, 1942 in Pawnee City, Nebraska to Max and Ada (Smith) Turnbull. The family later moved to Vliets, Kan. He attended school in Frankfort and graduated from Frankfort High School.
On May 17, 1966, he was drafted into the US Army and spent a tour of duty in Vietnam, where he was in a Recon Unit. During his time in the service, Roger was awarded a Purple Heart, for his injuries received during his tour, Vietnam Service Medal, Vietman Campaign Medal, Combat Infantrymen’s Badge and Marksman Medal (Rifle). After being discharged, he returned home to farm with his father.
Roger was a farmer/stockman, planting row crops and raising Registered Shorthorn Cattle. Even after retiring, he would spend his day checking the land and cattle. When he suffered his stroke and moved to Frankfort Community Care Home, he would still enjoy visiting with the staff about his cattle and doing farm chores.
Roger married Jacqueline Hazlett on June 27, 1970 at the Annunciation Catholic Church in Frankfort. They were blessed with three sons, Allan, Troy and Scott.
Survivors include his wife, Jacqueline; sons, Allan Turnbull, Troy Turnbull and Scott Turnbull, all of Vermillion; brothers, Ronald (Iris) Turnbull, Max Turnbull Jr.; two grandsons, Tyree and Teegan Turnbull; and nieces and nephews, Kevin (Jody) Turnbull, Tami (Bruce) Akin.
A memorial fund has been established and will be designated later. Contributions may be sent in care of Padden Funeral Chapel.
