Walter Richard Stumpf, 90, Topeka, formerly of Axtell, died January 15, 2021. He was born Sept. 25, 1930, in Astoria, New York, the son of Oscar & Gertrude Stumpf. Due to COVID, private family services were held on Saturday, January 23, 2021. The funeral was recorded and posted on the Kinsley Mortuary Facebook page after the service. Walt graduated from Manhattan (NY) High School of Aviation Trades in 1948. He worked for Harper Bros. Publishing until July 1951 when he enlisted in the Air Force. In 1952 he was stationed at Forbes AFB where he met and married LeNore Kuckelman. They became parents of 6 children during their 23 plus years as an Air Force family. They traveled the world both during and after his military career. Following his retirement, they moved to Axtell and made their home in the original hospital building. Walt then started his own insulation, plumbing and carpentry business. They were members of St. Michaels Church in Axtell and Christ the King Church in Topeka. He was well known as a baseball umpire. Walt was past Commander of the Local Post 214 of the American Legion, past Commander of the Marshall County Council, and past Commander of the 1st district Legion from 1992-93. He was a life member of the Legion, the VFW and the Knights of Columbus. Walt was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, LeNore; his parents; and 4 brothers, Harold, Frances, Charles & Alfred. He is survived by children, Barbara Pimentel, and Elaine (Richard) Hatch, of Topeka; Richard (Evan) Stumpf, El Dorado; Brenda (Mike) Leonard, Trenton, Ill; Dan (Diane) Stumpf, Auburn; and Roger (Kim) Stumpf, Salina; grandchildren (Jason, Melissa, Ricki, Ross, Corrie, Katy, Andrea, Emily, Victoria, Michael, Sarah, Maci, Grant, Kennedy), great-grandchildren (Braden, Brecklyn, Emerson, Bella, Dax, Connor, Liam, Elliott, Carter, and 2 on the way). He is also survived by his brothers Thomas & James of NY.; and in-laws Kay Gravenstein, Rozella Ronnebaum, Albert & Sharon Kuckelman, and Bee Kuckelman.
