Julian Schmitz, 76, of Axtell, KS, died Thursday, April 30, 2015 at Stormont Vail Hospital in Topeka, KS. Visitation was Sunday, May 3, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home in Axtell. A rosary service was held at 7 p.m., Sunday at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Axtell. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 4 at St Michael’s Catholic Church. Father Albert Hauser officiated. Kathy Buessing was the organist. Music included “On Eagles Wings”, “Seed, Scattered Sown”, “Amazing Grace”, “Precious Lord, Take My Hand”, “Come Home”, “How Great Thou Art” and “Those Who See Light”. The pallbearers were Jeremy Koch, Adam Koch, Jeff Mason, Nick Stenberg, Kevin Schmitz and Tim Mason. The honorary pallbearers were Stanley Schmitz, Val Schmitz, Larry Schmitz and Melvin Kramer. Burial was in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery. Julian was born April 23, 1939 near Baileyville, KS, to Paul and MaryAnn (Bergman) Schmitz. On June 5, 1965, he was united in marriage to Virginia Mason at St. Malachy’s Catholic Church in Beattie, KS. Julian was a farmer and lived north of Axtell near the St. Bridget area for 40 years. Julian served in the Army National Guard. He was a member of the American Legion, Knights of Columbus and served on the water district board. He loved all sporting events, track, soccer, baseball, and football. Julian liked tractor-pulling, pick-up pulling and deer hunting. He enjoyed playing cards with friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Kenny, Benny and Donnie Schmitz. Survivors include his wife Virginia; children, Julie (Gerald) Koch, Baileyville, Joyce Parli, Cle Elum, WA, Thomas (Tracy) Schmitz, Mulvane, KS, Vickie Schmitz, Galva, KS, Doug (Beth) Schmitz, Salina, KS, David (Valerie) Schmitz, Axtell, Daniel (Carrie) Schmitz, Beattie, Andrew Schmitz, Wamego; twenty-five grandchildren and one great-grandchild; siblings, Marita (Glynn) Gallagher, Kansas City, MO, Regis (Mary Jane) Schmitz, Baileyville, Roseanne (Don) Mitchell, Topeka, Evelyn (Larry) Heinen, Seneca, Edna (John) Kuhlman, Tecumseh, KS, Cyril (Joyce) Schmitz, Baileyville, Gilbert (Deb) Schmitz, Baileyville, and Kathy (Dan) Heinen, Seneca. A memorial fund is established and the family will designate later. Contributions may be sent in care of the Axtell-Landreth Funeral Home.
